Couple Therapy

CALM International provides excellent counselling for couples who are in a relationship, married or not. It's often referred to as marriage counselling or pre-marital counselling. Our goal is to improve the couples' relationship, or sometimes to help them decide whether or not they should continue staying together. Although the focus is on the couple, there are times when the individual psychological issues of one or both parties need to be addressed.

The therapist’s goal is to teach a method of communicating that allows couples to resolve their own issues during and after therapy. The goal is not to resolve issues. If a therapist attempts to resolve an issue, one or both partners will usually become defensive. Even if they accept the therapist’s solution, they will have many more conflicts lined up that the therapist can’t resolve.

The couples therapy process requires therapists to do the following:
  • Provide the couple with an understanding of the goals of therapy

  • Develop trust with each client without alienating the other

  • Set the boundaries of therapy so each will feel safe to express his or her point of view in a way the other can hear and understand, even though he or she may not agree; and

  • Set the stage for the couple to have a conscious relationship; that is, one where each partner begins to understand how he or she is contributing to the conflicts and how using a different communication style can lead to the joyful and harmonious relationship they both deserve.

Depending on the level of distress in the relationship, therapy can be short-term or over a period of several months or even years. We have experienced doctors and licensed therapists who are trained to counsel couples, as well as marriage and family therapists who specialize in relationship issues.

Individual Therapy

Calm International is a dedicated practice with the aim of assisting individuals in making his or her mark in today’s changing and challenging world. It caters to all cognitive and relationship issues of people of all ages, with a vision of providing reasonable and relevant mental health services of a high standard and professional quality to individuals at all levels of society.

Individual counselling or therapy is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times in life. Individual counselling/therapy can help one deal with many personal topics in life such as anger, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, marriage and relationship challenges, parenting problems, school difficulties, career challenges and changes, etc.

This is a process through which patients/clients work one-on-one with our trained mental health clinician in a safe, caring, and confidential environment. Counselling/therapy allows individuals to explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviours, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.

Individual counselling/therapy focuses on the individual's immediate or near future concerns. Individual counselling/therapy may encompass career counselling and planning, grief after a loved one dies or dealing with problems at a job before they become big. Individual counselling/therapy begins as a one-on-one discussion between the therapist and the patient/client, who is the person seeking treatment, and progresses into whatever treatment modality is needed in order to effect change or resolve. The two form an alliance, relationship or bond that enables trust and personal growth.

Online Therapy

Online sessions encompass the above two; that is, couples therapy and individual therapy. The difference is that sessions are conduction via an online video platform, which in the case of CALM International is either Zoom or Skype.

CALM International offers online video consultations, where individuals can access the same level of professional and superior service as given to those in face-to-face therapy. The difference is that you can stay in the comfort of your home, office, or any other environment, anywhere in the world, and still benefit from meeting with your preferred therapist.

This also saves on time, as you do not need to block several hours in your day to travel back and forth to see your therapist, you just need to block the exact amount of time needed for the session. Additionally, online sessions provide a level of anonymity as you do not need to go to a clinic or hospital where you might come across individuals you would rather not see.

Finally, the rate is the same, and more and more insurance providers these days, thanks to the pandemic, allow for telemedicine/telehealth/online sessions.
